About Biomass Boilers...
The boilers are an established technology on the continent and are well proven in Austria and Italy.
The choice of fuel is pellets which are a manufactured product designed to give a very reliable performance both in terms of handling and combustion and woodchip.
Woodchip systems tend to be cheaper but can require more careful handling, storage and increased boiler maintenance for example to clear blockages caused by damp chips.
The boilers operate at very high temperatures for efficiency and as a result require a high quality installation most notably in the case of the flue.
The boilers operate to maintain a constant reservoir of water in an accumulator tank which is used to provide hot water to the connected properties via a heat main (a highly insulated pipe typically buried underground). In the property, the heat main is typically connected to a heat exchanger which in turn heats a hot water tank locally.
The pellets are available from a number of UK suppliers and best economies (cost per tonne) are achieved by ordering large loads provided space is not a constraint. It is typical to have an automated pellet store which is sized to enable a sensible delivery schedule (and allowing for a buffer) to ensure flexibility of pellet deliveries. Often these are bespoke to fit the environment and the available infrastructure.
